Review: Icicles No. 5
Sex toys come in all sorts of materials. Silicone is fabulous and comes in various textures, densities, and firmness. Nothing can compare with the weight of stainless steel. Some day, I hope to try a toy made of wood.  For now, I can speak to glass toys. Not as heavy as steel and much more rigid than silicone, my first glass toy is fucking gorgeous. With the lovely blue spiral all along the length of the outside of the shaft, I think it has a simple, yet seductive quality to it. The Icicles No. 5 is not for the faint of heart (or cunt), but it is not super intimidating either. It is best suited for those interested in exploring textured or glass toys (or both!), or looking for something firm, but not super heavy.
My Experience
Using a glass toy is a whole other ball game. I almost wish I could backtrack to a somewhat less textured glass toy before trying out the Icicles No. 5. I would say it’s also the most textured dildo I have yet to test out. It wasn’t so much that I needed to be really warmed up to use it, though that helped, more like I needed to get to a certain “place” where I could keep fucking myself with it. A couple times that I was masturbating with the No. 5, there came a moment after orgasm where I experienced a somewhat uncomfortable, kind of pinching feeling. I can’t really explain it except that I think it’s related to the lack of give of the glass as compared to a more forgiving silicone.
The spiral can get  a little intense, which can be really delicious. It’s a sort of thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk as each ridge is inserted and pulled out. It really stimulated my g-spot. While testing it, I didn’t really attempt to specifically go for g-spot stimulation or to try to ejaculate, but I can see if I was super turned on, lubed up, with lots of time, and patience (and hydration!) it could possibly happen.
I wouldn’t say that the Icicles No. 5 has a curve by any means, but it does have the slightest angle which adds interest. In testing out the four directions as I try to do with dildos, it was a little bit challenging to tell if it felt especially “better” in one position over another. Certainly having it angled up toward the 12 o’clock (g-spot position) was really yummy. Not having much differentiation on the base made orienting the dildo a little frustrating. I really wish that there would be a small notch or something on dildos so that the user can tell “which way is up” without looking, or without fully removing it. I think that this would also be quite helpful for people who are harnessing up and strapping on.
Speaking of strapping on… The base of the No. 5 is flared, so it could be harnessed, if that’s what you want to do. And of course, flared bases make for safe anal play if you want to try that also. (I would recommend using a ton of lube if you’re going to try the Icicles No. 5 in the butt. I haven’t done it. I don’t plan to. I think it’d be too firm for me for that to be appealing, but yeah. Lots of lube. Very slowly.)
For the bonus round: Glass is a great material to experiment with temperature play. For warming sensations, you can pop the toy into a bowl of warm water. (Test it on your wrist before using it between your legs to be sure it isn’t too hot.) To cool things down, you could pop the Icicles No. 5 into the fridge or freezer for a few minutes (5 minutes would be fine), or have a bowl of ice water near the bed. The glass warms up from and retains body heat pretty nicely.
And the great thing about glass is it’s fine to use whatever lube with it that you want. I mainly stuck with a hybrid lube which tends to be creamier and last longer than straight up water based, but isn’t quite as slippery as silicone.
Specs
A word about the packaging. (More than a word, obviously.) It’s bulky and indiscreet, but it is damn near perfect for this one in terms of cushion-y protection. You don’t want it rolling all over and knocking about. Smart. Good job to Pipedream. On the other hand, let me just rant for a moment about how utterly annoying it is to see the Icicles called a “massager.” If you could only see me shaking my head. Yeah. In the description on the back of the box it does use the term “glass wand.” That’s alright. I’d prefer if we just call it a dildo, but that’s just me.
It is not the girthiest toy, or the longest. The Icicles No. 5 measures in with a total length of 7 inches, about 6.5 insertable. According to my measurements (which was rather challenging to do what with the spiral and all), it has a circumference of about 4.5 inches.
Clean up is a breeze. I just wash it with soap and warm water. Be sure use a cotton swab or soft toothbrush to get the areas around the ridges and the tiny notch right under the head (where the frenulum would be). You could also use toy cleaner; it can be run through the dishwasher; and you can do a 10% bleach solution (wash it off after!) if you need that extra level of cleanliness. It can also be boiled, put it the pot of water so that it comes to a boil (rather than dropping it in while it’s already boiling) to reduce that chance it would crack from the sudden heat, and leave it to boil for a few minutes.
Overall, I’m not the biggest fan of Pipedream (because their ethics are shady), but their Icicles line (and Ceramix line) are good toys. This one runs under $25, pretty reasonable for a dildo, especially a beautiful piece of art like the No. 5. Seriously, you could just display it in a case as art.
Huge thanks to the folks at Peepshow Toys for allowing me the opportunity to try out my very first glass toy!

Great review! Glass toys always look so beautiful in pictures 😀
Thanks! This one was my favorite to photograph, by far! I’m still kind of obsessed with the images I managed to get. 🙂
